NOTHING TO DECLARE I exhibited this piece called "nothing to declare" in a recent exhibition in Istanbul as I continue working in the same vein. still preoccupied by this state of being or living in-between cultures or being in a transitional stage, or in limbo, which brings us back to the subject of migration and crossing borders The space I worked with had a large window on a busy tourist street. So I turned the gallery into a carpet store. taking the most typical image that meant something to the outsider: the myth of flying magic carpets, and to the insider: the sacred prayer rugs... I grew grass on each of these carpets, and floated them in mid-space they were like traveling landscapes hovering above our heads. It also stresses this constant belief that grass is always greener elsewhere. That the best is always over there... unattainable... unreachable mythified. It also emphasizes the selling out of culture such as selling folklore to tourists a culture half real-half imagined and also it is about this self-orientalising attitude that is going on while, conversely, a brain drain is also widespread. With this show I also wanted to take culture and root at a different level... The barriers there were leading as well as misleading, in this confusion of "entrance" and "exit" signs. As the title I gave to the piece suggests: my point also was that: when you have nothing to declare, doors are always open Canan Tolon
